Future Projects at Big Hoof Foundation

Big Hoof Foundation has grown rapidly, and with that growth comes exciting new opportunities to make an even greater impact. As we continue rescuing and rehabilitating Belgian Draft Horses from kill pens and neglectful situations, it's essential that we expand our facilities to meet the growing need.

Barn Expansion additional runs - Ongoing

We’re expanding the other side of the barn to add three additional runs with indoor access for the horses. This will bring our total to eight runs and provide extra space to accommodate feeding horses with special dietary needs. Additionally, we will be installing more Ritchie automatic waterers in this area to ensure the horses have easy access to fresh, clean water at all times.

Barn Expansion additional shelter - Completed 12/2024

We recently completed an expansion at the back of the barn in December 2024, creating a 40x75 free-span open shelter area for the horses and donkeys. The project also included the addition of a 12x75 lean-to on the west side. Gutters were installed on both the new structure and the existing barn to help manage water runoff in the paddock area.

Adding another Ritchie Automatic Waterer - Completed 12/2024

With our herd growing rapidly, we installed a Ritchie OmniMaster 8 waterer to better support their needs. This advanced system, completed at the end of 2024, features a fully insulated body and a durable wraparound stainless steel trough. Its thermostatically controlled heating and fast-refill valve ensure a consistent supply of clean, fresh water, even in extreme winter conditions. Additionally, the built-in high-capacity drain helps maintain a sanitary drinking area for the animals year-round.

Fencing additional land (Upcoming)

We are planning to install fencing around the front portion of the property, which includes the adjacent paddock. This enclosure will create a larger, secure area where the horses can graze comfortably and roam freely, promoting their overall health and well-being. In addition to this, we are also preparing to fence the recently acquired 20-acre property located behind the farm. Securing this new land will significantly increase the available space for our herd, allowing for more natural movement and grazing opportunities, while helping us better manage the animals and maintain their safety.

Construction of a Second Barn - (Upcoming)

We are planning to construct a second barn for the horses to enhance their living space and improve overall management of the property. We are in the early stages of planning a new arena-style barn for our horses. Quotes are currently being collected, and we are assessing potential contractors. The new facility will support improved training, events, and year-round horse care.

Construction of a Round Pen for horse training - (Upcoming)

We’re excited to share the concept drawing for a new covered round pen designed to enhance horse training. This planned facility will offer a protected, weather-resistant space where trainers can work with horses. The design focuses on safety and comfort, featuring durable fencing and quality footing to support effective and consistent training sessions. This round pen will be a valuable addition to our facility, providing an ideal environment for both horses and handlers.

Growing Our Vision and Plans for the Future of our Foundation

The Big Hoof Foundation’s strategic plan outlines a bold vision for the future of equine rescue and advocacy. Centered on compassion, sustainability, and education, the plan focuses on expanding our sanctuary facilities, deepening community outreach, launching therapeutic programs for people with disabilities, and advocating for stronger protections against horse slaughter and neglect. With a commitment to lifelong care, we aim to increase our impact through stronger donor engagement, responsible financial growth, and strategic partnerships. This roadmap ensures that every horse in our care receives the dignity, safety, and healing they deserve, while inspiring a more compassionate world, one hoof at a time.
