Our rescued horses...
One of our pillars of the foundation is to educate others about the abuse and neglect these horses and so many others endure. Many of the horses we have rescued have worked on farms their whole life. Once they either became too old to work, or were injured and could no longer work, they faced neglect, abuse and were eventually shipped to kill pens for slaughter…. And this is where we come in to rescue them from a terrible, gruesome end.
We love to share the progress of the horses as they recover from the neglect and thrive in their retirement home with love and kindness. Therefore, we feel it is imperative to be transparent in sharing the stories of the horses we rescue.

We are dedicated to saving as many lives as we can without overcrowding our farm! Below are the animals we have rescued and a little information about each of them! Click the pictures for their full stories.
Lucky

Lucky was saved from almost being shipped to slaughter. We found Lucky at a kill pen in Kemp, TX on St. Patrick's Day in 2023. He was the first horse to be saved under the Big Hoof Foundation. Lucky was suffering from a horrible eye injury when we found him and he needed medical attention immediately.

Liam

Liam is BIG beautiful boy who showed up on the Bowie Texas Livestock website on March 29, 2023. It was said that Liam came from an Amish farm in Kentucky. He is 18.1 hands tall (6 feet 1 inch from the ground to the top of his back - height does not take into account the head or neck of the horse), weighs 1,875 pounds and is about 15 years old.

Lena and Dutch

Lena and Dutch were rescued together after we said goodbye to Lucky. We raised money to cover the cost of Lucky's cancer surgery and since Lucky did not have the surgery we put the money towards saving two more lives!

Amara

We came across a post for a mare lot# 9937 at Bowie Texas Livestock. She is an Amish horse that seemed to be lame in the back legs like so many of our other rescued horses here at the foundation. She also had a few wounds on the left side of her body. From the livestock yard video it looked like she had a large black spot on her back side. When we called Bowie we were told it was from rubbing in the trailer during transport.

Noah

At the beginning of June 2023, a subscriber/Facebook follower reached out to me asking if I had seen the Belgian Draft Horse Gelding that was listed on Bowie Texas Livestocks page and wanted to know if we could save him.

Quinn

On Thursday June 29, 2023, I was tagged in a Facebook Live post about a truck loaded and ready to ship to slaughter in Mexico from Bowie Texas Livestock. The truck was over full and two horses were pulled off the load because they could not fit on the truck. One was a Belgian Draft horse gelding. We were not planning on rescuing another horse but Cory and I believe that everything happens for a reason and there was a reason this horse didn't fit on the truck!
